Day 5 Notes:
Day five of the 2007 NFL Combine saw the defensive players hit the field at the RCA dome, as the linebackers and defensive linemen worked out on Monday.
Defensive Ends
All eyes were on Gaines Adams to see what he could do; he did not disappoint. Not only did he blaze the 40-yard dash with a 4.64, he looked great in the drills. He even looked great in the linebacker position drills. Adams solidified his place atop the defensive players in this year's draft and barring an unforeseen circumstance, he should be the first defensive player off the board in the 2007 NFL Draft.
Jarvin Moss was also impressive and for all the same reasons. Similar 40-times to Adams, and looked equally adept in the linebacker and defensive line drills. At 6'6" and 250 pounds, Moss might be a tweener, but he also might have guaranteed himself a round one selection with Monday's performance.
Quentin Moses on the other hand did not have a great day. After posting fairly pedestrian times of high 4.8's in the 40-yard dash, Moses also looked ragged in the position drills. He was quite sloppy in the linebacker specific drills, and the buzz is that he may be working himself OUT of the first round.
Defensive Tackles
Just as all eyes were on Adams for the Ends, Alan Branch was the top defensive tackle to watch. While it's sometimes tough to tell the conditioning of a 328 pound lineman, Branch looked out of shape. He ran a 5.10 in the 40 which isn't bad, but he slipped in a few drills and just didn't look sharp. Branch did show good strength throwing up a very respectable 33 reps in the bench press. There's no telling just how much the performance will ultimately hurt Alan's draft stock, but it certainly didn't help when there were scores of great defensive workouts.
Amobi Okoye from Louisville is a defensive tackle that is really garnering some attention. He plays hard, is a great athlete, and will be just 19 years old when he is drafted. He's impressed enough that he may be drafted mid-first round.
Tank Tyler from North Carolina State pounded out 42 repetitions on the bench press to not only lead all defensive tackles, but to lead everyone at the 2007 Combine.

Linebackers
The linebackers were arguably the most impressive group that has worked out so far at the Combine. There were a lot of eye-opening performances and a few guys really helped their draft stock because of it.
Quincy Black and Antwan Barnes scorched the track with both running low 4.4s in the forty yard dash (4.42 and 4.43 respectively). Black also jumped 41 1/2" in the vertical jump to lead all linebackers and show that he has great explosive power.
There were four other linebackers that clocked in at 4.51 (Justin Durant, Chad Nkang, Tim Shaw and Patrick Willis). Tim Shaw was perhaps the biggest surprise. Shaw has taken a backseat to Paul Poslusny at Penn State, but he really took advantage of his opportunity on Monday and put up good numbers in virtually every event.
More linebacker notes to follow later on today.

Day 4 Notes:
Day four of the 2007 NFL Combine saw the 'skilled' positions hit the field for drills and testing.
Wide Receivers
Calvin Johnson began the Combine as not only the top receiver in this year's draft crop, but arguably the top overall prospect as well. His first step in impressing the pundits would be the weigh-ins; he checked in at 6'5" and 239 pounds and accomplished his objective. That was going to be it for Johnson at the combine, as he said he was not going to workout until his pro date. But seeing all of the scouts and GMs may have changed his mind, because he decided to run the 40-yard dash anyway.
He posted the third fastest time of all receivers with a 4.35, and with East Carolina quarterback James Pinkney's shoes to boot (forgive the pun). Are you kidding? This guy is a freak. Where he goes in the draft will have nothing to do with relative ability, and everything to do with team needs. He's the most talented player in the draft bar none.
Robert Meachem really helped himself Sunday with a great day. He is in that second tier of receivers and with two of the better receivers not working out, Meachem definitely put his draft stock on the rise with a 4.39 in his 40-yard dash.
Jason Hill posted the second fastest time in Group 4 in a quick 4.32.
Two of the top receiver prospects did not work out; Ted Ginn Jr. and Dwayne Jarrett both opted to wait for their pro date to workout.

Running Backs
Adrian Peterson came to the NFL Combine as the top rated running back on most people's boards, and after Sunday's workouts, he solidified his position. Peterson put up some good numbers: 40-yard dash - 4.40, vertical leap - 38 1/2" and a broad jump of 10' 7"; all were in the top three for Peterson's group. The junior from Oklahoma was impressive enough that that now it's reported that he could go as high as number three to the Cleveland Browns.
Marshawn Lynch is the number two back on most boards and he also had a solid day. Lynch ran the 40 in a very respectable 4.46, and jumped an equally respectable 35 1/2" in the vertical jump which shows good explosion. Lynch didn't bridge the gap between himself and peterson, but he certainly didn't hurt his draft stock on Sunday either.

Quarterbacks
The most notable aspect of the quarterback workouts is that Jamarcus Russell and Brady Quinn did not participate. The two top QB prospects opted to workout at their own Pro Dates rather than in Indianapolis at the combine. Much ado has been made as to whether or not that helps or hurts draft status, but it certainly seems to be affecting Quinn and Russell differently.
Quinn has seen his draft stock fall at the Combine despite not working out. The one workout he did do was extremely impressive (he did 24 reps in the bench press), he showed up in great shape, and still people are nit-picking and looking for reasons for Quinn to fall.
Russell on the other hand showed up slightly overweight, isn't doing any workouts either , but somehow seems to have cemented the number one selection in the draft regardless.
More day four news and numbers will be posted later on.
Day 3 Notes:
While the first two days at the 2007 NFL Combine were mostly measuring and interviewing, day three saw the start of some real action. Both the offensive linemen and tight ends took to the field to conduct their individual workouts.
Offensive Linemen
The top three offensive line prospects on many draft boards are tackles Joe Thomas, and Levi Brown, and center Ryan Kalil; all three looked great on Saturday. While one struggles to understand what the value of a drill like the forty yard dash would be for an offensive lineman, all three fortified their stock when they ran sub 5.0 times. Thomas officially clocked in at 4.92, Kalil at 4.96, and while Brown was unofficially clocked at 4.96, his official time was unavailable at the time of press. All three were equally impressive in the mirror drill. While drills are drills, and games are games, the mirror drill is really an excellent drill to gauge an offensive lineman's technique. Not only did Thomas, Kalil and Brown perform well, but they were so fluid that they made it look like most others had done the drill incorrectly.
Thomas may have actually improved his already strong draft position. When a guy is 6'7" and runs a 4.92, he's going to open some eyes. When he's already the top player at the position going in, he's going to open someone's check book. It's tough to see Thomas being available any later than the number three slot after Saturday's performance.
Kalil may have actually helped himself the most though, and really fortified his position as a first round selection with a great all around performance. He weighed in at 299 pounds (after playing at 285 pounds), but Kalil proved Saturday that he had no trouble carrying the extra fifteen pounds and moved very well. Kalil himself said, "I wanted to show that I could carry it." He certainly showed just that.
Tony Ugoh is another top grade prospect that had an eye-opening day. Not only did he run two forty times at or around 5.0 (5.06 officially), but after pulling up at the end of the last run with a quadriceps pull, he insisted on continuing through some drills. Somehow he managed to not only compete in the broad jump, but jump 9'9" which is seven inches further than any lineman even jumped at last year's combine. With a pulled quad? While the numbers were good, the sheer determination and perseverance might have been even better. Road graders are always great to come by.
After opening a few eyes with Friday's best 40 repetitions of 225 pounds in the bench press, Justin Blalock followed through with a respectable 5.10 in the forty yard dash, and a solid performance in the position drills.
Two small school linemen made an impression as well; Missourri Southern State's Allan Barbre and Akron's Andy Alleman. Barbre posted the absolute best 40-time of all offensive linemen (4.84), Alleman the second best (4.91). Both proved that they move well and will now likely draw considerably more attention and looks from some NFL teams.
Tight Ends
Greg Olsen and Zach Miller are widely considered the two top tight end prospects in the draft, but Olsen was clearly the cream of the crop on Saturday. Not only did he post the best time in the forty yard dash, but he did so decisively. Unofficially Olsen ran times of 4.47 and 4.45, but it was later reported as an official 4.51. While it wasn't quite as impressive as Vernon Davis' 4.38 performance last year, it certainly put Olsen's draft stock on the rise by virtue of the fact that it was two-tenths of a second faster than any other tight end. Olsen weighed in at 6'5 7/8", 254 pounds, jumped a very solid 35 1/2" in the vertical jump, looked great in the gauntlet drill, and ran crisp routes in position drills. He also made several stabbing catches and looked sharp all day long.
Olsen may have put some separation between himself and Miller with the performance, as Miller had a more average day. Miller checked in at 6'4 3/8", and unofficially ran times of 4.84 and 4.83 in the forty yard dash. He was a little erratic in the gauntlet, but looked considerably better in the actual passing drills.
Michael Allan put the Division III Whitworth Pirates on the proverbial NFL map with a great combine. He posted the second best 40-time for a tight end at 4.71, he caught the ball well, and most importantly, he matched up well in every respect with the other tight ends. When a smaller school guy can show that he physically rivals his peers, he grades out as a good project. In a shallow tight end class, Allan's performance helped his own cause as much as anyone else on the field on Saturday.
Day 2 Notes:
Friday saw the arrival of the quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers to the 2007 NFL Combine. Exactly 100 players arrived at the combine yesterday, 90 on Thursday. So far, Tennessee wide receiver Bret Smith is the only player slated to arrive that hasn't.
Day two consisted of more weigh-ins and interviews for the quarterbacks, wide receivers and running backs, but the offensive linemen and tight ends that arrived on day one also did some psychological testing and started their workouts.
The offensive linemen did their bench press workouts, and both Texas Tech guard Manuel Ramirez, and Texas guard Justin Blalock benched 225 pounds, 40 times. Here are some other notable results: Levi Brown - 31 reps, Joe Thomas - 28 reps, Ryan Kalil - 34 reps, Dustin Fry - 34 reps, Brandon Frye - 34 reps, Nathan Bennett - 34 reps.
All of the players are weighed and have their height measured accurately when they arrive, so that there can be no 'tippy-toes' or exaggerations. Here are some of the most notable players' unofficial statistics from yesterday's measurements:
Quarterbacks: Jamarcus Russell - 6'5 1/2" - 265 pounds Brady Quinn - 6'3 1/2" - 233 pounds Troy Smith - 6' - 225 pounds Chris Leak - 5'11 7/8" - 203 pounds Jordan Palmer - 6'5 5/8" (tallest) Reggie Ball - 5'10 5/8" (shortrtest)
Running Backs: Michael Bush - 6'1 3/4" - 234 pounds Adrian Peterson - 6'1-1/2" - 217 pounds Marshawn Lynch - 5'11", 215 pounds Darius Walker, 5'10", 206 pounds Kenny Irons, 5'11", 203 pounds Tony Hunt - 6'1 1/2” - 233 pounds Dante Rosario - 6' 3 2/8" (tallest) Garrett Wolfe - 5'7 1/2" (shortest)
Wide Receivers: Calvin Johnson - 239 pounds Paul Williams - 6’1” - 205 pounds Matt Trannon - 6'6" (tallest) Syndric Steptoe - 5'8 5/8" (shortest)
|
2007 NFL Combine invitees will take part in the following events: |
 |
40 Yard Dash The 40 yard dash is a test of speed and explosion. The player starts from a three-point stance and runs 40 yards as fast as possible. The player is timed in 10, 20 and 40 yard increments, to gauge the player’s explosion of the line and time to top speed.
|
 |
Bench Press All players, with the exception of quarterbacks and wide receivers, participate in this test of strength. The player’s goal in this event is to bench press 225 pounds as many times as possible.
|
 |
Vertical Jump Most important to wide receivers and defensive backs. To measure vertical jump, a player stands flat-footed in front of pole with a multitude of plastic flags sticking out. The bottom of the pole is adjusted to the height of the player’s fingertips when raised straight above his head. The player then jumps from a standing position, and tries to swat as many of the plastic flags as he can. The flags, staged every half inch on the pole, rotate and give the event judge a reading of the height the player jumped.
|
 |
Broad Jump The broad jump is also done from a standing position, but this drill measures how far a player can jump. This drill is most important to positions that use lower body strength to gain an advantage (i.e. offensive and defensive linemen and running backs). The length of the jump is measured from the starting point to the back of the heel closest to the starting point upon landing.
|
 |
3 Cone Drill Tests speed, agility and cutting ability. Three cones are set up in a triangle or L shape, with each cone 5 yards apart. The player starts in a 3-point stance at the first cone. The whistle blows and the player sprints 5 yards ahead to the first cone, reaches down and touches a white line and then sprints back to the starting cone. At the starting cone, he reaches down and touches a white line, then heads back to the second cone. This time, he runs around the outside of the second cone, and cuts right to the third cone. He runs a circle around the third cone from the inside to the outside, then runs around the second cone before returning to the first cone.
|
 |
20 Yard Shuttle The 20 yard shuttle test lateral speed and coordination. The player starts in a three point stance, straddling a yard line facing the sideline. When the whistle blows, the player runs 5 yards to one side, touching the yard line. He then sprints 10 yards in the other direction and again touches the yard line, at which point he sprints back to the yard line he started from.
|
 |
60 Yard Shuttle The 60 yard shuttle is basically the same drill as the 20 yard shuttle. The only difference is that instead of running 5 yards, 10 yards then 5 yards, the player runs 10 yards to one side, then back 20 yards and then 10 yards to the starting point. This drill is probably the best test of endurance in the entire combine.
|
 |
Position Specific Drills Maybe one of the best ways to test a player’s ability to play a position is to run them at drills specifically designed for players of their position. Coaches and Scouts typically run the players through the drills, taking note as to their performance. These drills are typically overlooked for some of the sexier drills, like the 40 yard dash and bench press. |
|
Other Drills:
Physical Measurements Each player in attendance will be measured for height, weight and arm and hand length. Offensive and defensive linemen, as well as running backs, are also measured for body fat percentage.
NFL Team Interviews Each NFL team is afforded the opportunity to interview up to 60 of the prospects in attendance. The interviews take place in the player hotel, and typically contain questions designed to test a player's character, mental toughness and football intelligence.
The Wonderlic Test The Wonderlic test is designed to test a players I.Q. The test is 50 questions long, and each player is only given 23 minutes to complete it. Though the test is very rarely completed, the Wonderlic is typically regarded as a good way to measure a player's intelligence.
The Cybex Test The Cybex test starts with a player strapped to a machine. The machine tests the player's joint movement and flexibility. While this test does not typically receive much attention, this test can be the difference between the first day and second day on draft weekend for a player with either a recent injury or a history of injuries.
Injury Evaluation In conjunction with the Cybex test, each prospect also must survive a myriad of medical tests, including X-rays and physicals, to ensure that the player's injuries have all healed.
Urine test As with any prospective employees these days, each prospective player must pass a urine test, designed to identify any substances deemed illegal by the NFL including marijuana, cocaine and performance-enhancing drugs.
