Posted November 14, 2011

Close to 10 additional suspected victims have come forward to the authorities since the arrest of the former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky on Nov. 5 on 40 counts of sexually abusing young boys, according to people close to the investigation. The police are working to confirm the new allegations. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: Paterno Is Finished at Penn State, and President Is Out

Posted November 9, 2011

Graham B. Spanier, one of the longest-serving and highest-paid university presidents in the nation, who has helped raise the academic profile of Penn State during his tenure, stepped down Wednesday night in the wake of a sexual-abuse scandal involving a prominent former assistant football coach and the university’s failure to act to halt further harm. NCAA Football: Don't look for a rematch between LSU, Alabama

Posted November 6, 2011

The folks on CBS couldn't get past the postgame interview with LSU coach Les Miles without bringing up the possibility of a rematch with Alabama in the BCS Championship Game.

No. 1 LSU's 9-6 overtime victory over No. 2 Alabama on Saturday was exciting, to be sure, but it's hard to justify putting the same two teams back in the national championship game.

The reasons are many. First of all, LSU still has a big game against Arkansas to play and must win the SEC championship game to reach the national championship game. But considering Oklahoma State, Stanford and Boise State remain unbeaten, it seems quite unlikely that Alabama would also find its way into the title game in New Orleans. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: LSU, Alabama ready for old-style football

Posted November 5, 2011

The LSU and Alabama showdown promises to be a throwback to old-school football.

Both top-ranked but barely tested LSU and No. 2 and mostly unchallenged Alabama are built on power runs and run-stuffing defenses in a time when spread offenses are in vogue and huddles are optional.

"If you want to see 1970s smashmouth," Alabama tight end Michael Williams said, "then this is what you want to see right here." (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: This feels a lot like the beginning of Matt Barkley's farewell

Posted November 5, 2011

Sitting on a bench outside Heritage Hall on a warm late-summer day, Matt Barkley told me he would leave the USC early for the NFL only if he finished his junior season strong.

"I want to put myself in a position to go out with a bang," he told me.

Nearly three months later, on a chilly fall Friday night in the mountains, Barkley's play continued to make a noise so distinct, there is only way to describe it.

Bang! Barkley threw a school-record six touchdown pass in a 42-17 victory over Colorado. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: The wait is over for No. 1 LSU vs. No. 2 Alabama

Posted November 3, 2011

You might have heard there's this college football game in Tuscaloosa this weekend. Kind of important. Might have a few people attending. A few more might watch on television. Tickets could be a little expensive. And a few members of the news media might show up. All they're playing for is an expected trip to New Orleans in January.

In reality, there's no downplaying the importance of this week's No. 1 vs. No. 2 clash between LSU and Alabama. The stakes are huge. The interest is huge. And the anticipation has been building with the teams on a collision course since the start of the season. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: Game week arrives for much-hyped Alabama-LSU

Posted November 1, 2011

It was hard to escape the hype around the LSU-Alabama game when both squads were off last week. Now, it's downright impossible.

Alabama linebacker Dont'a Hightower had just finished celebrating a win over Tennessee two weeks ago when he saw the first ad for the LSU game. When Barrett Jones chatted with family and friends back home in suburban Memphis, they didn't want to talk about the Vols game.

Like everybody else, they wanted to talk No. 1 LSU versus No. 2 Alabama. (MORE>>>)

After two days of uncertainty after its invitation to the Big 12 was unexpectedly pulled backed, West Virginia received news Friday morning that it has again been invited to join the conference. NCAA Football: Keenum break records in UH's rout of Rice

Posted October 27, 2011

The Houston Cougars offense regularly produces video game-like statistics. And while it took some time before the offense got in gear, once it did, it was as if the Cougars were operating with a few cheat codes.

With record-breaking quarterback Case Keenum at the controls, the Cougars erased an early 10-point deficit to explode for a 73-34 win over the crosstown rival Rice Owls to claim the Bayou Bucket and remain undefeated in front of 32,112 on Thursday at Robertson Stadium. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: Luck vs. Barkley: Tale of the tape

Posted October 26, 2011

USC football coaches took their seats on the Andrew Luck Hype Wagon this week, with Lane Kiffin calling the Stanford redshirt junior "one of the best ever to play," and his dad, Monte, who coached for 25 years in the NFL, calling Luck "one of the top quarterbacks ever."

Not long ago, ESPN columnist Rick Reilly suggested that NFL teams soon will begin tanking games so they can angle for Luck with the No. 1 overall pick.

"Luck is so indescribably good, I fully expect somebody to lose in their bye week," Reilly wrote. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: Alabama and LSU Mean Business

Posted October 24, 2011

College football’s latest “Game of the Century” is now officially on the radar, the upcoming Nov.5 matchup between Louisiana State and Alabama, the nation’s top two teams, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Both powerful Southeastern Conference foes will be idle the week of October 29, giving the game a Super Bowl-like two week buildup and essentially assuring they will head into battle as No. 1 (LSU) and No. 2 (Alabama).

It’s the kind of matchup that reminds us why the SEC is in the process of raking in $3 billion over 15 years from CBS and ESPN. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: Reports- LSU's Tyrann Mathieu, Spencer Ware suspended for Auburn game

Posted October 19, 2011

No. 2 LSU could be without three of its top players Saturday when it hosts No. 23 Auburn.

Defensive backs Tyrann Mathieu and Tharold Simon and running back Spencer Ware have been suspended, multiple news outlets reported, including The Associated Press reported which citedg a person familiar with the decision.

When contacted by USA TODAY, LSU spokesman Michael Bonnette said he "could not confirm or deny" the punishments. He did say the players are involved in an internal matter that is being handled by coach Les Miles. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: NCAA finds no major violations against Auburn

Posted October 12, 2011

The NCAA says it found no major violations committed by Auburn regarding Cam Newton or other pay-for-play allegations.

The NCAA released a statement Wednesday saying it has closed its 13-month investigation into Auburn's recruitment of the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, whose father shopped his services to another school for nearly $200,000. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: No. 5 Boise State dominates Fresno State 57-7

Posted October 7, 2011

Geraldo Boldewijn caught two touchdown passes in his first game back from suspension and No. 5 Boise State extended its dominance over former WAC rival Fresno State in a 57-7 victory Friday night.

Kellen Moore went 23 of 31 for 254 yards and three scores in his 43rd career win for the Broncos (5-0), who have turned this once intense rivalry into a lopsided affair.

Boise State led 30-0 before Fresno State (2-4) even crossed midfield, and it took a 43-0 lead early in the third quarter on Doug Martin's 1-yard run to extend a run of 104 straight points against the Bulldogs. (MORE>>>)
