College Football/Recruiting: Top recruit Dorial Green-Beckham picks Missouri

Posted February 1, 2012

Dorial Green-Beckham, born in St. Louis and adopted by a family from Springfield, Mo., made the hometown fans happy by signing with the Tigers.

At 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds, the receiver already looks like an NFL prototype, comparable stars such as Calvin Johnson and Andre Johnson.

He whittled his choices down to Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri in January, and on Wednesday morning at Hillcrest High School he picked the Tigers.

"I felt like they've (Missouri) been there since day one," Green-Beckham said.

Missouri first offered him a scholarship at the age of 15. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: No. 19 Oklahoma Beats Iowa 31-14 in Insight Bowl

Posted December 30, 2011

Blake Bell ran for three touchdowns to help No. 19 Oklahoma survive a late rally and a crashing camera to beat Iowa 31-14 in the Insight Bowl Friday night.

Oklahoma (10-3) didn't get a particularly great game from quarterback Landry Jones and wasn't effective on the ground, either. Once considered national-title contenders, the Sooners grinded it out against the gritty Hawkeyes, ending a difficult year that included the death of linebacker Austin Box in the offseason.

Jones threw for 161 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and Bell put the game away with a 21-yard touchdown run with 45 seconds left. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: Paterno retiring amid child abuse "tragedy"

Posted November 9, 2011

Joe Paterno, the Penn State football coach who preached success with honor for half a century but whose legend was shattered by a child sex abuse scandal, said Wednesday he will retire at the end of this season.

Paterno said he was "absolutely devastated" by the case, in which his one-time heir apparent, Jerry Sandusky, has been charged with molesting eight boys over 15 years, including at the Penn State football complex. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: Tigers' Lee went from backup to SEC's most efficient quarterback

Posted November 3, 2011

It was halftime of LSU's Nov. 8, 2008, home game against No. 1 Alabama. The score was tied 14-14, thanks in part to Crimson Tide safety Rashad Johnson's 45-yard interception return for a touchdown against LSU quarterback Jarrett Lee late in the second quarter. For Lee, a redshirt freshman from Brenham, Texas, who'd been pressed into action following the offseason dismissal of expected starter Ryan Perrilloux, it was one of a staggering seven pick-sixes he would throw that season.

In a hallway in the back of the Tiger Stadium press box, writers and assorted dignitaries from the adjoining luxury suites mingled while noshing on hot dogs or watching highlights on a nearby TV. SEC commissioner Mike Slive, spotting the wife of an LSU administrator walking by, reached out to shake her hand. She returned the gesture, but with a dour look on her face. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: Alabama's Trent Richardson can make Heisman statement vs. LSU

Posted November 2, 2011

Alabama running back Trent Richardson already had his Heisman highlight: a dazzling 76-yard run vs. Mississippi (see video below) that included numerous broken tackles and a jaw-dropping start-stop juke move. "That would have thrown my hip out its joint," LSU coach Les Miles said.

Richardson could do more than that with a big performance Saturday against an LSU defense allowing 76.6 yards rushing a game, third in the country. He could bolster his already strong Heisman resume and become the second Tide runner to win the award in the last three years. (MORE>>>)

NFL/NCAA Football: Colts, Dolphins lead Andrew Luck Sweepstakes

Posted October 30, 2011

"To the victor go the spoils" is a cliché that doesn't always necessarily apply to the NFL, at least in regard to getting drafting rights to the next prized college quarterback.

This season, that distinction belongs to Andrew Luck, the Stanford quarterback who is almost universally regarded as a can't-miss performer at the next level. After defeats Sunday, the Indianapolis Colts (0-8) and Miami Dolphins (0-7) lead the Luck sweepstakes — getting the No.1 pick in the 2012 draft — as the only clubs still searching for their first win. The Colts fell behind early in a 27-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans. The Dolphins lost in a more heartbreaking fashion, falling 20-17 to the New York Giants after leading for most of the game. NCAA Football: Oklahoma State cruises past Texas

Posted October 16, 2011

Twice Oklahoma State's Jeremy Smith took a handoff, hit the line of the scrimmage and braced himself to get smacked.

Instead, there was nothing but yards of green field, the burnt orange end zone and the groans of nearly 100,000 Texas fans in front on him.

Smith ran for 140 yards on seven carries, scoring on runs of 30 and 74 yards straight up the middle of the defense, and No. 6 Oklahoma State rode several big plays to a 38-26 over the No. 22 Longhorns win on Saturday. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: No. 9 Oregon beats No. 20 Arizona State

Posted October 15, 2011

Darron Thomas threw for 187 yards and two touchdowns before he left with left leg injury and ninth-ranked Oregon survived his absence with a 41-27 victory over No. 20 Arizona State on Saturday night.

It was the second straight game that the Ducks have lost a key player to injury. Running back LaMichael James dislocated his elbow in Oregon's last outing, a 43-15 win over California.

Kenjon Barner, who started in place of James, ran for 171 yards and a touchdown, while freshman De'Anthony Thomas ran for 73 yards and two scores for Oregon (5-1, 3-0 Pac-12). (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: No. 3 Sooners roll to 47-17 win over Kansas

Posted October 15, 2011

Bob Stoops knew that Ryan Broyles was one catch away from becoming the NCAA's career leader, so the Oklahoma coach called for a pass play that sent his All-American wide receiver on a deep post route.

Might as well set the record in style.

The senior hauled in a 57-yard touchdown pass from Landry Jones in the first half Saturday night, and Broyles finished with 13 catches for a school-record 217 yards and two scores as the third-ranked Sooners rolled to a 47-17 victory over Kansas. (MORE>>>)

NCAA FOOTBALL: Spartans shut down Robinson, Wolverines again

Posted October 15, 2011

Denard Robinson had so much green on his white uniform, it looked like he played for Michigan State.

Michigan's quarterback got beat up, bruised and knocked out of Saturday's loss 28-14 to the Spartans.

"They weren't playing dirty," Robinson said. "It's a dirty game."

Robinson walked off the field with his head down - giving him a view of a grass-stained white pants - after the 11th-ranked Wolverines matched a school record with a fourth straight loss to No. 23 Michigan State. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: USC football beats Cal for 8th straight time

Posted October 14, 2011

Matt Barkley threw two touchdown passes and Southern California took advantage of five turnovers from California to win its eighth straight game in the series, 30-9 on Thursday night.

Marqise Lee and Brandon Carswell caught TD passes but it was the defense that bailed out USC (5-1, 3-1 Pac-12) on a night its offense struggled to click. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: South Carolina dismisses quarterback Stephen Garcia

Posted October 11, 2011

Stephen Garcia's turbulent career with South Carolina is over. The senior quarterback was dismissed from the team Tuesday.

"Being a student-athlete at the University of South Carolina is a privilege, not a right," athletic director Eric Hyman said in a statement, "and we remind all of our student-athletes that there are consequences for their actions. For Stephen to return to and remain with the football squad this fall, we agreed on several established guidelines. Unfortunately, he has not been able to abide by those guidelines and has therefore forfeited his position on the roster. We wish him the best of luck as he moves forward in life." (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: TCU Expected to Announce It Will Join Big 12

Posted October 10, 2011

TCU scheduled a "major announcement" for Monday evening in what was expected to be a move to the Big 12 Conference.

The school did not disclose details of the event, but a person with knowledge of the plans told The Associated Press that TCU trustees were scheduled to meet Monday to likely accept an invitation to join the Big 12. The person spoke on condition of anonymity late Sunday because the university was not prepared to publicly reveal its plans. (MORE...)

NCAA Football: LSU dominates overmatched Gators- ESPN

Posted October 8, 2011

Things should have been worse.

A lot worse.

LSU dominated all aspects of Saturday’s 41-11 drubbing of Florida in front of the third-largest crowd (93,022) ever in Tiger Stadium.

Had the Tigers not momentarily called off the dogs in the third quarter, Florida’s wounds might be impossible to lick.

Despite giving up just 213 total yards to the Gators, LSU linebacker Ryan Baker said the defense was upset that Florida scored at all.

“In a way, guys were upset that we actually gave up some points,” said Baker, who had five tackles Saturday. “Every time we come into a game, we feel like we can shut a team out.”  (MORE...)

NCAA Football: Oklahoma Crushes Texas-ESPN

Posted October 8, 2011

The state of the baby-faced Texas Longhorns secondary is apparently so fragile that defensive coordinator Manny Diaz felt the need to stress the silver lining Saturday afternoon.

Hey, how about that second half?!

"I thought we continued to battle," Diaz said. "This team has a spirit that's hard to break. Even though the scoreboard didn't look the way we wanted it to look, I thought we finished well."

Saying the scoreboard didn't look the way the Longhorns wanted after a 55-17 loss is kind of like saying all that fried food at the State Fair is fattening.

Texas' spirit might be hard to break, but the perception that the Texas pass defense might be prepared for elite competition burst like a bubble at the Cotton Bowl. This game turned into a laugher quickly in large part because the Longhorns' secondary was easy pickings for Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Landry Jones and his receiving corps. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: LSU's Mathieu Latest Defender To Get Heisman Attention

Posted October 8, 2011

Honey Badger for Heisman.

Maybe?

LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu -- aka Honey Badger -- seemingly has been everywhere for the Tigers this season, compiling a stat line in four games that most defensive backs would be happy to accomplish in a career.

The sophomore has forced four fumbles, recovered three fumbles and scored two touchdowns. He's got an interception and 11/2 sacks. He also leads the team in tackles and is second in tackles for loss.

So in honor of Mathieu, here are seven defensive players who made a run at the Heisman Trophy.
