NFL Draft: Heisman winner Griffin has impressive Pro Day (CNNSI)

Posted March 21, 2012

WACO, Texas (AP) - Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III has completed an impressive pro day performance.

With Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder and coach Mike Shanahan among NFL personnel watching, Griffin was sharp on a scripted 51 passes he has been working on with quarterback consultant Terry Shea.

Griffin, who didn't throw at the NFL combine last month, was at ease throughout his 30-minute session. He smiled, slapped the hands of his receivers - including Baylor teammate and NFL prospect Kendall Wright - and was precise on most throws.

Washington traded three first-round picks and a second-rounder to St. Louis for the No. 2 pick in next month's NFL draft. That's presumably to select Griffin since the Indianapolis Colts, now without Peyton Manning, are expected to take Andrew Luck from Stanford first overall.

2012 NFL Scouting Combine: Massive Dontari Poe shows speed, too

Posted February 27, 2012

INDIANAPOLIS—When Memphis' Dontari Poe checked in a 6-4 and 346 pounds, it was clear he had the ideal size to be a nose tackle in the NFL. He then helped his draft stock with 44 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press, which showed he worked hard in preparation for the Combine.

On Monday, Poe knocked everyone’s socks off by running the 40-yard dash in the high 4.8s with a quick and explosive initial burst.

Obviously, nose tackles aren't needed to chase plays down all over the field, so the actual 40 time isn't that important. However, his initial acceleration out of the blocks showed he can get out of his stance and on top of offensive linemen before they can get set.

With nose tackles in such demand, Poe moved ahead of Washington's Alameda Ta’amu and could well have locked up a spot in the top 15 picks in the draft

NFL Draft 2012: Top 50 Prospects For 2012 Draft

Posted February 24, 2012

The final phase of scouting for 2012 begins this week with the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Now that the season and all of the following All Star games are complete, it's time to revisit and reshuffle the big board. Here are the top 50 players on SI.com's big board as we get ready for a busy week ahead (* denotes underclassman).

1. Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford* -- Luck has been the top NFL prospect in the nation for almost two years and nothing has changed. He'll be the first player selected in the draft and the Indianapolis Colts will barely notice the bump in the road as they transition from the Peyton Manning era.

2. Matt Kalil, T, USC* -- Kalil's pass protection skills are on par with former Trojan great and All Pro tackle Tony Boselli. The junior needs to improve his run blocking, but possesses all the skills necessary to be a big-time left tackle in the NFL.

3. Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama* -- Richardson is the most complete running back in this draft, and likely the only first-round pick from the position. He's a versatile ball-carrier who also positively effects the game as a pass-catcher. The junior has the skills to immediately produce as a rookie in the NFL.

4. Robert Griffin, QB, Baylor* -- Griffin has the misfortune of being in a draft that includes Andrew Luck, the best quarterback prospect since Peyton Manning. Despite that, he's a legitimate franchise signal-caller and a great combination of athleticism, arm strength and maturity.

5. Quinton Coples, DL, North Carolina -- The top senior on this list is a pure dominator who can play several spots on the defensive line. He's a man amongst boys when on his game, but scouts question Coples' intensity on an every-down basis.

6. Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State* -- His game was NFL ready last year, but Blackmon decided to return to school to improve his skills as well as work on his degree. Blackmon matured last season as a player and person. His style reminds many of Terrell Owens.

7. Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU* -- Though not the caliber of athlete as former LSU star Patrick Peterson, the fifth pick in last April's draft, scouts think Claiborne is more polished in his ball skills. The junior has the ability to develop into a No. 1 corner for an NFL franchise.

8. Riley Reiff, T, Iowa* -- Reiff is a tremendous pass-blocking left tackle, though many scouts think he could shift to the right side. He possesses the footwork, body type and wherewithal to break into a starting lineup early into his rookie career.

9. Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor -- Wright was the top recipient of passes coming from Robert Griffin, and scouts love his game. He's a legitimate field-stretcher with polished receiver skills. Wright's name sits atop the wideout position on a number of draft boards around the league.

10. Melvin Ingram, DL-OLB, South Carolina -- Few defensive prospects raised their game and draft stock as Ingram did last season. He's a playmaker who stands out in almost every aspect of the defense, with his ability to make plays behind the line of scrimmage or out to the flanks.

11. David DeCastro, G, Stanford -- Andrew Luck's top blocker has been the dominant force on Stanford's offensive line the past two seasons. He's rightfully being compared to All Pro Steve Hutchinson and offers potential in a variety of NFL blocking schemes.

12. Michael Brockers, DL, LSU* -- Brockers capped off a tremendous sophomore season with an awesome showing in the national title game. He's an explosive interior lineman who eats up blocks and collapses the pocket.

13. Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama* -- Kirkpatrick is a feisty corner who physically beats down opponents to defend passes. He possesses outstanding size, continues to display improved ball skills and projects as a No. 1 cornerback in the NFL.

14. Fletcher Cox, DL, Mississippi State* -- Cox is one of the hidden values at the defensive line position. Scouts feel he's one of few available three-down defenders and offers the ability to play as many as four different positions on the defensive line.

15. Courtney Upshaw, DE-OLB, Alabama -- Upshaw was the feared pass-rusher in Alabama's suffocating defense, and scouts expect much the same from him at the next level. The lingering question is which position will Upshaw play at the next level, outside linebacker or defensive end? Or both?

NFL Combine 2012: Robert Griffin III stands tall at NFL combine

Posted February 24, 2012

ESPN- We learned something today about Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III at the NFL combine today. He really is 6 feet 2. Well, to be accurate, RG3 measured in at 6 feet 2, 3/8 inches.

He was listed at 6-2 at Baylor, but there had been talk that he was closer to 6 feet. While quarterbacks like Drew Brees and Michael Vick have overcome the lack of height, there is a stronger track record for taller quarterbacks in the NFL.

Height still matters in this league, and there's not a lot of instances where teams use draft picks on short quarterbacks, especially first-round picks.

So, RG3 passed his first test at the combine. He will interview with teams tonight, which includes a 15-minue chat with the Cleveland Browns. The Browns are in the process of determining whether RG3 is worth trading up from No. 4 in the draft. -ESPN By Jamison Hensley

NFL: Trent Richardson, Dre Kirkpatrick, Dont'a Hightower Entering NFL Draft

Posted January 12, 2012

As expected, three key pieces to Alabama’s championship run are leaving for the NFL, Tidesports.com reported.

RB Trent Richardson, LB Dont’a Hightower and CB Dre Kirkpatrick are expected to announce today at a news conference that they will bypass their senior seasons at Alabama.

The Crimson Tide won its second BCS title in three years Monday, whipping LSU, 21-0, in New Orleans.

In his most recent mock draft, Sporting News draft expert Russ Lande projects Kirkpatrick to be the first Tide player off the board at No. 7 by Jacksonville. Lande projects Richardson will go 16th to the New York Jets. Lande does not have Hightower being selected in the first round, but does have Tide teammate, safety Mark Barron, being taken 17th by Cincinnati.

NFL: LSU's Claiborne expected to leave for NFL draft

Posted January 12, 2012

LSU defensive back Morris Claiborne appears to have played his final college game.

Claiborne, junior, will announce plans to enter the NFL draft, according to The Associated Press, which cited multiple people with knowledge of the situation.

Ranked No. 4 draft prospect by ESPN's Mel Kiper, Claiborne is expected to be one of the top picks this April after a season where had six interceptions and recorded 51 tackles. (MORE>>>)

NFL/NCAA Football: Colts, Dolphins lead Andrew Luck Sweepstakes

Posted October 30, 2011

"To the victor go the spoils" is a cliché that doesn't always necessarily apply to the NFL, at least in regard to getting drafting rights to the next prized college quarterback.

This season, that distinction belongs to Andrew Luck, the Stanford quarterback who is almost universally regarded as a can't-miss performer at the next level. After defeats Sunday, the Indianapolis Colts (0-8) and Miami Dolphins (0-7) lead the Luck sweepstakes — getting the No.1 pick in the 2012 draft — as the only clubs still searching for their first win. The Colts fell behind early in a 27-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans. The Dolphins lost in a more heartbreaking fashion, falling 20-17 to the New York Giants after leading for most of the game.
