Veteran slugger Jim Thome agreed Friday to a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, The Associated Press reported.
"I'll keep playing," Thome said last month. "I just need teams to call me. I can't go play in the backyard by myself. I don't know the demand for a 41-year-old DH, but my passion is I want to continue to play." (MORE>>>)
The pain from their loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Division Series still fresh, the Phillies announced several injury updates Saturday night, starting with injured first baseman Ryan Howard.
Howard collapsed to the ground after making the final out in Game 5 of the NLDS on Friday at Citizens Bank Park. An MRI exam Saturday confirmed he ruptured his left Achilles tendon. The Phillies said Howard cannot have surgery until the swelling resolves, and recovery time will not be known until after the surgery.
But the Phillies also said, "There is no guarantee he will be ready for Spring Training." (MORE...)
